Art Shows

Artists from the Ajax Creative Arts Centre invited Astoria Magazine to have a sneak peek of artists preparing for a show. It was fun to talk to artists and see works in various stages of completion. It makes you appreciate the many hours and painstaking persistence and attention to detail that goes into a work of art. There were almost as many styles as artists, and each has a unique viewpoint of imagination, fantasy and reality to share.

Artists are an uncommon group and many of the world's changes have been interpreted and recorded by artists who by their very nature are communicators of a deeper reality than is often seen by us meer mortals about our hurried and harried lives. With their art they make us stop and see. Stop and inhale. Stop and sigh, maybe even cry. Whether realism or fancy, art touches a soul and if you let it, changes and gives you an etherial something new.

an art display by Artist Barbara Talbot

Artists works were attractively displayed both on walls and units throughout the gallery. Above is a colourful and imaginative display of art by Barbara Talbot.

Ajax Creative Arts president and artist, Don Hightower was on hand to welcome members of the public to the show.

Show Convenors, Maggie Burgess and Kim McCann pictured from left to right below did a fine job of organizing and promoting the show, putting up signs and managing many of the miriad tasks involved in a show of this size. Kim also helped paint the mural on the right.

Both artists are standing in front of the Miniature Art section of the show. Exquisite little paintings, easy to collect and display in your home. See Maggie's 'Deer Paintings in the Woods"

Show attendees, meander through two large gallery rooms of art, admiring and shopping to their hearts content.

Ajax Creative Arts has a unique way of supporting new artists and giving everyone of their members an opportunity to show and sell their works at their Spring and Fall art shows. Artists wishing to show their works, and having a body of work ready for the show put their names in a basket and approximately 50 artists names are drawn. The system assures that each show has a varied group displaying their works.

A supportive art environment, one feels a wonderful camaraderie among the members, who both actively engage in their passion as artists and the business of managing and running a successful art organization for over 40 years.

Finished mural at Ajax Creative Arts

Above is the finished mural, as seen on the introductory page to this article, a great 'stage' backdrop and collaborative painting also on display. The wooded scene was painted by artists Pam Auguste, Mary Lumb and Kim McCann. Kim is also an interior designer and enjoys working at the art centre. Pictured on the right in the photograph at left, Kim was also a show convener.

No show would be complete without some goodies, and a 'spot of tea' and the Ajax Creative Arts Group donated sweets and savouries to be enjoyed in the tea room, with proceeds going to the Children's Wish Foundation. Below three artists also volunteering in what is fondly known as 'Rose's Tea Room' tempt us with a few of the delicacies.

There were many volunteers taking turns doing jobs from greeting people coming to the show, making sure details were taken care of as well as wrapping up the purchases. Seen above are three of the women who greeted guests as they entered the show.
