Building Smart and Sustainable Communities !
Array International Architects Inc. presented a new development project to be built at 875 Kingston Road in Pickering. It is a state of the art building incorporating leading edge environmental methods, materials and systems. Ned Allam BA Arch OAA,MRAIC, who has been involved with the Ontario Association of Architects ‘Steering Committee on the Environment, is pleased that the City of Pickering has embraced the forward thinking ideals included in this project.
The 875 Kingston Road Building will be a 10 story residential condominium complex with commercial/retail/office uses on the ground floor. It will include a ‘Green Roof System’ and garden area. The green roof system will save energy and improve water efficiency by reducing runoff and filtering pollutants, while at the same time providing a beautiful and enjoyable garden space for residents.
The building will include a fresh air indoor rainforest system called a “Breathing Wall” by Genetron Systems in the public areas of the building. A Breathing Wall by Genetron Systems has been cleaning the air in one of the University of Toronto buildings with great success for several years.
People entering the building will enjoy the atmosphere created by the Breathing Wall. Individual units can be fitted with a ‘Breathing Wall ’ umbilical into their own units. Wolfgang Amelung of Genetron Systems says, “ People who come to the building to shop or visit one of the offices, will find they feel good in the building and will probably return often, just because the air makes them feel so good.”
Also included will be windows consisting of Azure, low E glass to save on energy consumption. It will be powered by a Solar Energy system Geo-Thermal Heating and Cooling System and an Invisible Structure paving system which improves water run off efficiency. Systems used in the building will reduce energy costs while at the same time reduce pollution caused by conventional power generation methods.
This building represents the latest in Sustainable developments and will be a great place to live in when built. Judging from the interest expressed by visitors to the booth, there will be a waiting list for sales of the new condominiums, live/work lofts, offices and Town House style retail units.
