Lorette C. Luzajic

Lorette C. Luzajic and I met each other at her Toronto apartment for tea this spring. Seems we have an intolerance to wheat in common and she wanted to find out how I cope with it, recipes and stuff, Lorette C. Luzajic and I was fascinated with her as a writer and possible contributor to Astoria Magazine.

Lorette certainly has a vivacious personality and a way with words, we both enjoyed interviewing each other. I tried to coax her cat into having a photo taken with her but he preferred to sit looking out the window. Lorette is seen here holding one of her recent books, 'Weird Monologues for a Rainy Life', oh did I mention Lorette has a great sense of humor? A good trait and one of the most difficult areas in writing. People remember humor and this can be a real asset in copywriting.

Originally we met at a networking event in Toronto, sort of a fluke really; we were both trying to get the parking meter to take our money so we could get into the meeting. Neither of us knew we were going to the same place. Lorette was taking her mom out that snowy Sunday for an outing in T.O. Lorette's mom has a B&B called Bird Song Chalet, Bed and Breakfast in Niagara-on-the-Lake, (Phone 905 262 5080).

When I arrived Lorette, sat me down with a cup of her special herbal brew, and as I had brought a couple of pieces of my gluten free Lavender Chiffon Angel Food Cake to sample, a concoction I had invented for a party last fall, we enjoyed our sips of tea and cake talking about the gluten free diet, foods to remember like scones and biscuits,  books, and Lorette's passion for writing.

When you look around Lorette’s cute flat, you know she has a love for books; both her own, and others that she loves to read. An artist with words Lorette also dabbles in painting and I admired the colourful abstracts that graced her walls.

Lorette has a Bachelor of Applied Arts from Ryerson University School of Journalism which she makes good use of in her career as a writer. She is kept busy with writing gigs for several publications online and in print. One of her specialties is writing feature articles and reviews for businesses as well as copy for brochures and websites.

Often people are not aware of the difference a professional writer can make to having their words actually read or their point really coming across. Training and an active creative mind can make all the difference. Plus the nuances of writing for the web and various media.

Lorette is good with names and phrases to get you noticed; in fact she calls her business, ‘The Girl Can Write’. And I can surely attest that she can! From a simple interview she crafted an approximately 700 word page for Gremolata entitled 'Gluten Free Trina Takes the Cake', that made tears come to my eyes. It is a beautiful article about one of the things I love to do, create great gluten free foods and recipes for people. Thanks Lorette!

What is the difference between?
Advertising
Advertorials
Editorials, Publicity & News

Advertising – You pay for it, decide and examine what is said. Keep it snappy and professional. Styles change according to the times and the type of business. The advertiser is in control. An ad can include photographs, graphics and words.

Advertorials – a blend between an Editorial and advertising. Written and looks like a publicity article. This is a promotional piece that a business was able to have done for them because they bought an ad beside the Article or on a different page in the online or print publication. This is a very effective form of marketing and easier to get than a strict publicity or news story. A magazine pays the photojournalist or writer to do a publicity piece on you or your business to feature you as a result of your ad purchases.

Editorials & Publicity –Traditionally, papers and magazines pay writers for stories which they publish. These usually fit in with something they feel will sell their publications at the time. A publicity writer writes what they want to based on the interview, submits the Article or Review to the publication, facts are checked and depending on the timing and whims of the editors, the article gets published. The writer can say kind things about your business or unkind things. Both images and writing can be slanted in various ways by a skillful writer or photojournalist.

News. Well we all know what news is. When it comes to having your name or business in print they say there is no bad news but one may well beg to differ as there is a big difference between becoming famous or infamous. In order to be published the 'news' has to be timely, and be something exciting and newsy that will catch the reading publics attention.

News releases for business or promotional reasons are good business. They need to be written in a way that will spark the interest of the editor or writer. If you are attaching a press release to an email, make sure you put a tickler in the body of the email. These days, due to the volume, something will only get opened if it is a fit and looks interesting.

Writing is fun,

Writing can bore you, make you cry or make you laugh.

A writer can make you chuckle, feel the wind whipping through your hair, even though you may just be sitting in your easy chair!

A writer can tell your story...
Make you sound like a princess dressed in diamonds and lace
or covered from head to toe in mud and slimey green goo that's all gory!

A writer can inform and advise,
entertain and disguise.

A writer can help you find what you are looking for
or help others find you, your place and even your store.

So if you would like to have an Advertorial for your Toronto business
in Astoria Magazine
