You can stand and stare and photograph orchids and still they fascinate you all the more. They are so relaxing and inspiring to look at, it is almost like they take you into their world. They say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." There is a magic that happens between the beholder and an orchid...I think.
One of the best ways to relax is to find a cozy corner on a porch, spread a blanket on some grass, by a lake is even better, and read a book or thumb through a magazine and just dream.
These days, a laptop is an easy way to indulge yourself in a world of wonder. And I hope you will enjoy looking at these photographs of orchids. Scroll down the page slowly and enjoy the full surprise of color, drink into your soul, their quiet grandeur, and come away refreshed and whole.
There are many wonderful web sites out there telling you all about how to grow them and such. Certainly interesting. I'd love to grow some, I was given a couple and kept them alive for some months, feeding and watering them and trying to follow all the directions I'd been given, all to no avail.
So I have to dream and go to orchid shows and nurseries and just ooh and aah.
Maybe one day, when I have some larger window sills. Right now the best place for growing anything in my home is taken up by a large orchid cactus and a Queen of the Night Cactus which blooms profusely every now and then, but only for one night. So hard to show a friend. Whereas now, an orchid, would stay there looking beautiful for what? a month or more, goodness!
This was the first time I attended an orchid show and there was a special time, set aside for photographers, amateurs and professionals alike in order to photograph the show. It was a zoo ! Yet everyone was polite and in some cases it was fun as I would 'shoot' one way and someone else, would 'shoot' across from another angle. No starlet on the runway could have felt more supreme than these orchid stars. I would have loved to have more time, set up lights, but you just had to roll with the scene, and I still came away with some to enjoy long after the show.
Special thanks to The Southern Ontario Orchid Society and the patient and knowledgeable growers for putting on such a splendid show.
