New Community of Seaton
Pickering, Ontario Canada
Seaton Community
A new community is in the planning and proposal stages that could capture the spirit of what a forward thinking community should be. “Planning with a clean slate gives a wonderful scope to do things right for a sustainable future.” Planners have great hopes that the new residents of Seaton will be extremely proud to live and work in this new community balanced between nature, the environment, and sustainability for the future, gracious living, activities and employment opportunities.
The new Community of Seaton is to be located in north Pickering. See gold area on the 2nd map from the top at right. The City of Pickering display at the Sustainable Pickering Day event was to garner feedback and information about the type of community that people want to have.
Maps were on display at a Sustainable Pickering Day booth and visitors were asked to write their comments and draw walking paths on maps of the Pickering area. As the north Pickering area is would require a balance between nature, future sustainablility and progress, the City of Pickering's Office of Sustainability is working hard to assure the area is managed properly for future generations.
Located amongst a beautiful natural environment, 54% of the new 'Seaton' is designated as a Natural Heritage Preservation System in order to protect, maintain and enhance these natural areas.
The plan also provides for some agriculture uses within a conservation and greenbelt framework.
Seaton hopes to be a community with a balance between modern living, and sustainable environmental practices. A comfortable newly shaped community using the best ideas in new community planning as well as input from the surrounding Pickering residents.
Employment opportunity considerations in the plan promote prestige employment lands for light manufacturing, office uses and a business park setting which can accommodate about 26,000 workers. Employment will also be provided in two community nodes and live/work corridors providing space for about 14,000 workers. Mixed uses in planned ‘Community Nodes’ will have services of many kinds to offer the new community.
Residential Neighbourhoods are being planned to encourage diverse densities with a more compact pedestrian scale design and a range of housing types. The plan provides for 15 residential neighbourhoods each accommodating from 3,000 to 5,000 people.
The lands in being used for Seaton, are a prominent component of the North Pickering Land Exchange of November 2003 enacted by the provincial government in which developers received land in Seaton in exchange for lands owned by those developers on the Oak Ridges Moraine, primarily in Richmond Hill and Uxbridge.
