Love museums? Love looking at all those yesteryear treasures, finding out how others lived and the ways in which they prospered?
You are not alone. According to a Statistics Canada study on where people choose to go while on vacation or taking a day trip, museums and heritage sites rank right up there. Finding a place where you can lie out on the beech, have a picnic by a river and generally enjoying nature are tops on people's lists when looking for things to do on a vacation. Once you have had some relaxing time in the sun though, it is great to seek out something that interests you, enhanse the trip, take back more visual memories to muse over later.
Whitby History Museum & Children's Centre located at 123 Brock Street South, in Whitby Ontario is a small museum in a storefront in the historic Town of Whitby. Toronto of course is the big city nearby, but by only by a quirk of fate. Whitby was slated in the early days to be the 'big city' it had a larger harbour, but Toronto's harbour was deeper was chosen over Whitby. Nevertheless, Whitby has a rich history to explore.
The museum's collection is large for its small homey atmosphere and visitors are always amazed at the scope it entails. A living concept museum, it opens its doors all year round for walk through tours and other special events including Victorian Teas and children's activiites at various times.
Whitby is l ocated on the north shore of Lake Ontario and the museum is easily accessible, with plenty of town parking, just off the 401 hwy between Toronto and Kingston Ontario.
The Whitby Historical Society is planning celebrations for their 40th Anniversary year. As they were founded by a small group of dedicated volunteers in 1967 as a Canadian Centennial Project and Incorporated in 1968, they have two years to celebrate.
See details on their website as they occur.
