Mayor Pat Perkins at Heritage Day Celebrations in Whitby Ontario Canada

Heritage Day in Whitby attracted big crowds as usual this year and among the visitors to the celebrations was Mayor Pat Perkins. "Whitby is truly a great place to live and work, and is a vibrant and enterprising town." says Mayor Perkins. Whitby is blessed t have an old fashioned centre, warmly referred to as the 'Heart of Durham Region' and treasures its rich heritage.

Above, Mayor Pat Perkins enjoys a chat with School Board Trustee, John Dolstra. They both enjoyed a walk through all the exhibits and many of the main street stores. It was fun to be able to walk down the middle of the street as busy Brock Street was closed for the event to through traffic.

Both Mayor Pat Perkins and John Dolstra visited the Whitby History Museum & Children's Centre complimenting on the fine job it is doing to encourage tourism.

Whitby is one of the few places in Durham Region with a downtown museum, it offers many services and an Information Centre to tourists. Open all year, it had many visitors from all over the world this summer as well as many boaters venturing north into town from the Whitby Marina and Yacht Club. The museum, run by volunteers is an active place offering many services to the community and its children. For Whitby's Sesquicentennial, it donated 9,000 books about Whitby to local school children. The Whitby History Museum is located at 123 Brock Street South. See their web site.

Old fashioned toys with Karin Sheppard

Even in this day and age of computers and slick modern games, the old fashioned ones still amuse and delight as Karin Sheppard, part time museum curator above, finds as she demonstrates old tyme toys at a table outside the museum.

Inside the Museum were demonstrations of heritage arts, needlework, textiles and rug hooking.

Heritage Day is great family fun every fall in Whitby.

Always lots of activities for the children and wonderful outdoor BBQ's, home baking and fresh fruits and vegetables at the Farmers Market in front of the Old Fire Hall.

And what would the day be without a visit to the old fashioned bran tub at the Museum, which had a toy for every child playing for only a dollar. You can still buy entries to the History Contest and win among others a $1000.00 1st Prize for only $5.00 a try. But hurry, contest closes in October.
